Here's to another Whānau Friday post 👏 For today's post, the following kōrero were captured through Niho Ora ki Hauraki- dental initiative. At the first dental round, which was held at Pito Hauora in Thames, we were very touched by the level of gratitude shown to the staff of Dental Planet and Te Tara o Te Whai. Introducing... He Kahu Kōrero 🪢 He Kahu Kōrero is a ten-week programme in Hauraki for rangatahi of school years seven and eight and their whānau to learn about whatu and create whatu kākahu (garments) in a broader cultural context. This is delivered by Ngā Tūmanako Whitianga Charitable Trust with backbone support from Hauraki PHO, and supported by Te Aka Whai Ora. We're back with another instalment for Whānau Fridays 🩵 This week, Manawa describes his struggles with attending kura. He finds that, as a Māori youth, he is treated differently as his learning style isn't compatible with school. Creating opportunities and other avenues of education for our rangatahi is essential. It helps those who aren't built for standardised classroom experiences the chance to thrive. As one of our priorities in Pare Hauraki, we have been working on ways to support the future and well-being of our rangatahi. Kia ora e te whānau, Following the announcement of our dental initiative, Niho Ora ki Hauraki, we thought sharing additional information may help answer some questions you may have. Te Niho Ora ki Hauraki initiative is a response to the overwhelming demand expressed by whānau in Hauraki for a free mobile dental service delivered closer to home. This initiative is a collaboration between Te Tara o Te Whai, Te Whatu Ora and Dental Planet. Niho Ora Ki Hauraki will be delivered during the school holidays throughout 2024 and will be coming to Manaia during the next April school holidays. Stay tuned for more details in the upcoming weeks. Ngā manaakitanga o te wā e hoa mā ✨ Due to the overwhelming number of responses we have received towards Niho Ora ki Hauraki (dental initiative), all available appointments in Thames have now been filled. We will continue to contact people who have expressed interest to keep you informed 🩵 Our next round of dental appointments will open during the Easter School Holidays (April 15th) and will be operating in Manaia. It is envisaged that the core functions of Iwi Māori Partnership Boards to be considered will include: 🌿 engaging with whānau and hapū, and sharing the resulting insights and perspectives with Health NZ, the Māori Health Authority, and the wider health system; 🌿 assessing and evaluating the current state of hauora Māori in their locality or localities, and determining priorities for improving hauora Māori; 🌿 to agree locality priorities and plans with Health NZ and the Māori Health Authority; monitoring the performance of the health system in their locality or localities, including against the locality plan; and 🌿 reporting on their own activities to whānau and hāpori Māori, and other relevant partners. The plan will bring together national expectations and the priorities, needs and contexts of mana whenua and local communities. Once signed off, locality plans will drive procurement by Health New Zealand and the Māori Health Authority and be the basis for progress monitoring.

There are three characteristics of a locality. First, it is a partnership with mana whenua, recognising their tino rangatiratanga. Second, the approach supports locally-led solutions that take a holistic approach to well-being, acknowledging the range of other factors that impact a person’s health. Third, the locality approach will join up care across communities and improve integration with different layers of the health and social system. There are formal working arrangements within the locality approach that underpin this new way of working: Locality partnerships will be formed across iwi, health and social care and community organisations. Locality partnerships will work with Iwi-Māori Partnership Boards, Health New Zealand and the Māori Health Authority to develop locality plans – these will set out how the agreed objectives will be achieved. Provider networks will work together to deliver on the locality plan. The mechanisms bringing together providers across health and social care will include contractual arrangements, shared financial incentives and data-sharing arrangements. Provider networks will work with a wider group of community organisations to support comprehensive primary care teams – making more care available closer to home.
